USAR Facilities and Equipment
The specialised training provided for the USAR Team for the Nairbi Metropolitan Area is being conducted at a purpose-built training ground specifically adapted for urban search and rescue exercises and simulations.
Activities conducted at the training ground include:
- Safety Management – Ensuring the safety of both rescuers and victims throughout the operation.
- Identifying Hazards – Recognising the types of building collapses and associated hazards during rescue operations.
- Locating Potential Survivors – Identifying possible locations under the rubble where living victims may be found.
- Physical Search – Conducting a thorough physical search of the rubble to locate victims.
- Use of Technology – Utilising geophones and inspection cameras to aid in the search and locate victims more precisely.
- Shoring and Structural Support – Applying methods to stabilise and support damaged structures, ensuring the safety of rescuers during operations.
- Breaching Techniques – Cutting and drilling through construction elements to create a breach, providing access to victims trapped under the rubble.
- Lifting Heavy Debris – Using pneumatic and mechanical equipment to lift heavy construction materials and debris.
- Confined Space Navigation – Moving through tight, confined spaces to reach victims.
- Victim Evacuation – Safely evacuating victims from confined or hazardous spaces.
The USAR Team for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area is being provided with the appropriate hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment for securing the scene, searching for casualties, shoring up structures, lifting heavy loads, breaching construction elements, and rescuing victims.
